Department of Social Work was established in 1993 as a part of the then Faculty of Human Sciences of the Trnava University in Trnava and its first head was prof. MUDr. Ladislav Šoltés, DrSc., Dr. H.c. After the establishment of the Faculty of Health Care and Social Work, the department became its part and is still one of its oldest departments. Currently, 13 researchers are working at this department for pre-defined working hours, of which is 3 professors, 6 associate professors and 4 assistant professors.

This department provides education in one bachelor study programme (Social Work), two master´s degree study programmes (Social Work and Management and Organization of Social Services) and one doctoral study programme (Social Work).

Department of Social Work implements intensive international partnership within international networks (European Research Institute for Social Work, SOWOSEC, CEEPUS) as well as at the bilateral level (University of Opole, Dragomanov University, Jagiellonian University, University of Hradec Králové, University of South Bohemia in České Budejovice and many others). The result of it is active and broad educational and scientific cooperation in joint publications with both our and foreign experts and in research tasks as well. The work of the department staff is cited by other authors in the Slovak Republic and abroad too. The result of the above-mentioned activities is the department´s evaluation in the complex accreditation of universities in 2015, where our department achieved the overall result B+.

The members of the department are achieving significant research results, as evidenced by the quotation of their works and the fact that they are regularly asked to write reviews of scientific articles and scientific professional monographs published in Slovak and foreign publishing companies. They are members of universities academic councils, doctoral, habilitation and inaugural procedures in the Slovak Republic, the Czech Republic and Hungary, and work in expert and advisory committees at the MPSR SR (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Slovak Republic), the MŠVVŠ SR (Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic) and the MS SR (Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic).

As a part of the Erasmus+ programme, they regularly give lectures at partner universities in Austria, Germany, Finland, France, Poland and the Czech Republic within the Erasmus+ programme. They also work on editorial boards of scientific and professional journals – both Slovak and foreign. Many of them are members of the research and organizational committees of important research conferences, heads of specialised sections and also organizers of Slovak international research and scientific events.

Members of our department are members of significant professional organizations, work on the governing bodies, administration boards and supervisory boards of organizations such as AVSP, ERIS, CEVS, and also are successfully participating in arranging research international and Slovak projects in agencies like APVV, VEGA, FP7, Visegrad Fund and others.
